  • Meaning Behind Design

The design of the MixKumul T-shirt resulted from a desire to create a product that represented a mixture of Modern and Traditional. The MixKumul features our beloved Bird of Paradise sitting on a traditional Kundu Drum, a very familiar symbol of Papua New Guinea. The Bird of Paradise is our Country’s national animal and national symbol while the Kundu Drum is a familiar instrument traditionally used throughout all of Papua New Guinea. However, the MixKumul on our T-shirt has a subtle difference from the normal way these symbols have been represented.

You will notice that the left half of the design has traditional Papua New Guinean art incorporated into it, while the right half of the design maintains a simple and modern style of the graphic. As MixBilas, we desire to work towards representing and maintaining Papua New Guinea’s Traditional Art and Culture as our country develops and modernizes.

With this in mind, you will also notice that the intentional layout of our MixKumul T-shirt maintains this same balance between modern and traditional. While still maintaining a modern approach to the minimalistic front of our T-shirt, we allowed the back of our shirt to have a larger graphic that splashes color and stays true to Papua New Guinea’s colorful culture.

We hope this shirt reflects our desire to help our country develop in a way that stays true to our rich culture but doesn't shy away from sustainable modern development.
